On 1898, Cuba, filled with violence and hostilities, wanted to gain their independence from the Spanish Empire and turned to the United States for help. In order to protect the American enterprises in Cuba, the government placed USS Maine in the Havanna Port, which exploded. War as declared after the Americans blamed Spain for the explosion due to sabotage. It was not until recently that a spark inside the ship explained the explosion, not foul play that ignited the war. After the war, the United States, although expressing freedom for the Cubans, ruled over Cuba, using the Platt Amendment.
