In 1848, intermarried Californios and white settlers discovered gold in the California territory, starting the California Gold Rush. Mexico got California. California wanted freedom and turned to the United States for help to get it. After the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, the United States gained California, invalidating the Missouri Compromise. The Compromise of 1850, Fugitive Slave Act, was created, declaring California as a free state and in return, escaped slaves must return to their master.
